BASIC In School

Basic In-school offers 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students the opportunity to experience sport skill acquisition on a practical basis and then learn about the life of professional baseball athletes who not only excelled in skills but also helped shape the evolution of United States society at the midpoint of the 20th century.

The ABF partners with Better Basics Inc. to provide BASIC in-school to champion reading classes.

More than 440 students in  Birmingham schools participated in the BASIC in-school programs.
The ABF achieved a landmark in its programming by implementing the 10th annual Rickwood Summer program on Birmingham’s West side last year. Over the ten-day program (four hours per day) attendance averaged 62 of the 92 children registered. Each child that attended daily received a new bat at the end of the program. The ABF partnered with the Friends of Rickwood to provide the venue.

Also Community Education East provided funding to pay the teachers who came from the Birmingham City Schools. Lunches for the children were supplied by the federal lunch program.

The ABF enjoyed the volunteer services of students from John Carroll Catholic High School who assisted in the instruction and logistics of the program.
